Malta and Hasselblad
Ah, Malta—the inconspicuous island that lures unsuspecting travelers with promises of serene beaches and tranquil landscapes. Little did I know, this Mediterranean gem had a mischievous side, eager to play pranks on an unsuspecting photographer like me.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by the island's notorious left-hand traffic—a relic from its British colonial days. Navigating the narrow streets of Valletta became an impromptu adventure sport. Each turn felt like a game of "dodge the balcony," as colorful overhangs threatened to introduce themselves to my rental car's side mirrors.
Determined to capture the famed Dingli Cliffs at sunset, I set out with high hopes. The weather, however, had other plans. What was forecasted as a clear evening quickly morphed into a windstorm, turning my tripod into a makeshift sail. As I clung to my equipment, I couldn't help but chuckle at the irony of battling gales on an island known for its "calm" climate.
A trip to the neighboring island of Gozo promised a respite. I envisioned photographing the Azure Window, only to be informed upon arrival that it had collapsed years prior. Instead, I found myself at the lesser-known Tal Mixta Cave. The cave's entrance was so inconspicuous that I walked past it twice, mistaking it for a shadow. Once inside, the breathtaking view of Ramla Bay made the unintentional detour worthwhile.
Back on the main island, the ancient city of Mdina beckoned with its cinematic alleys. As a "Game of Thrones" enthusiast, I was eager to walk through the iconic city gate. However, my timing coincided with a local festival, and the streets were filled with modern food stalls and souvenir vendors. The juxtaposition of medieval architecture and contemporary hustle was a shot I hadn't planned but embraced nonetheless.
In Marsaxlokk, the picturesque fishing village, I aimed to capture the vibrant boats bobbing gently in the harbor. Instead, I was met with a bustling market day, where the serene waters were obscured by stalls selling everything from fresh fish to faux designer handbags. The colorful chaos provided a different kind of photographic opportunity, one that showcased the island's lively spirit.
Reflecting on my Maltese escapade, I realized that while the island may appear inconspicuous, it's brimming with character and surprises. The unexpected challenges and unplanned moments added depth to my journey, reminding me that the best stories—and photos—often come from the adventures we least anticipate.
