Lords of the Wupper

Hiking along the Wupper, one of the well-traveled routes in the Lower Rhine. A well-known destination is the Castle of Burg, a 19th-century reconstruction of a 14th-century castle. Part of the hiking experience was a large dam on the Wupper River and not to forget the early engineering marvel of the Müngstener Bridge.

The castle in Burg was once the seat of the Dukes of Berg. They ruled this mountain state in the highlands of the Rhine. The development began earnestly with the Industrial Revolution. Due to this fact, we can experience and visit countless villages seemingly trapped in the past.

In contrast to the pre-modern traces of the Duchy, the many examples of the industrial revolution are apparent. Some of the waypoints to visit are a large dam on the Wupper River and the early engineering marvel of the Müngstener Bridge. The whole trek is a walk through periods of history for the Duchy of Berg, the lords of the Wupper valley.
