Portraits (Streetportraits)

A photographic portrait is a picture of someone who knows he is being photographed, quoted by Richard Avedon. Accordingly, a portrait implies 2 things:

  1. A photographer setting up the shot

  2. The subject consents to the portrait

Reasons to take portraits in the streets are, in my opinion, the following:

Working fast and getting used to quickly set your camera and compose.

Approaching a complete stranger and getting out of the comfort zone.

Having interesting experiences.

The challenges to take portraits in the streets are

  • talking to strangers

  • nailing your settings in camera

  • getting a good picture fast

Apart from the above reasons to get into taking street portraits, I started today to get the hang on my camera with vintage lenses and manual focusing at open aperture.

Here the first one taken with a 135mm f2.8 lens form Pentacon initially called the King of Bokeh - old lens produced in the GDR.
