Market places in Manila

Strolling over the markets in Manila to discover the essentials of street photography.

Street photography has a notable association with the art world. Some known names created their legacies by making images of people and places on the street, documenting the decades in which they performed. Personalities such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliot Erwitt, and Helen Levitt are interchangeable with street photography and created the world they pioneered. With certain concepts like Cartier-Bresson's 'decisive moment,' many photographers today try to interpret this idea in their modern approach. Digital photography has changed how photographers view and see the world around them.

I explore street photography like a contemporary artist. So I'm going out to a Photowalk over Manila's markets. Armed with my camera, I will be in search of an exciting subject, if possible, in a perfect street composition.

Looking for people first and then the background, I am searching the places. Sometimes there is a perfect background, and I'II set up and wait for someone to enter the scene. Using a medium format camera seems counterintuitive to maintain discretion, but I adapt and mostly remain as inconspicuous as possible.

To avoid unwanted attention, I'll keep shooting after I've taken a picture of somebody. If I stopped and checked the back of the camera straight away, anybody would know what I was doing. Looking interested in the environment and acting casual, the crowd was mainly unsure of what I was creating a photo of. People see what you're doing but don't seem to care most of the time. It all depends on where you are.
