I saw the shi-sa
Sun splashed, laid back, a bit coarse around the edges, the Ryukyu Islands better known as Okinawa invert Japan’s usual precision and polish. Did I mention the lions?
Shi-sa lions can be seen on top of roofs or at the gates of Okinawan homes and businesses, and nearly at any street corner. From small to large, old and new, shi-sa lion statues help ward off evil. How they came to be the protectors is a story told and retold over the centuries so often that many different stories resulted. Here an old one and just before that I passed a very living young one.
