Avatar story from Hong Kong
Just returned from a short trip to my beloved Hong Kong, I developed some of the 120 film rolls I took for some creative, experimental shots I took with my trusted medium travel format camera. The Fujifilm GF 670 professional, a workhorse with a simple, but great functional feature set.
The fixed 80mm focal length lens, equivalent to 50mm on a 35mm camera, has an aperture reach from f/3.5 to f/22 and produces excellent and first-class images. It might be the most exceptional lens I have ever used. Focusing rangefinder style is easy enough and very fast. For those unfamiliar with this, it's a small rectangle in the center of the frame showing an overlaying image. Just adjust the lens distance until the smaller image matches the main one to indicate correct focus. The camera can shoot in 6x6 or 6x7 cm format.
The GF670 Professional is so slender to carry and, while big, it's easier to take around than any other standard SLR style medium-format, such as the Hasselblad 500. It's far quicker to use too and easy to carry around to places you may not have considered usually bringing a medium-format camera.
Film does need some additional effort over digital, but the medium format negatives in their native resolution can create large prints without upsizing them at all. The amount of detail in medium format is stunning and apart from a little more effort the fact the post-processing is a Zen-like activity for me.
For my experimental shooting, I used apart from b/w film some LomoChrome Purple Film, which I cross processed afterward. The new formula of the LomoChrome Purple has increased sensitivity to red hues, improved exposure at the recommended setting of ISO 400, and less grain than its predecessor.
