A Deadly Hobby
Most Hindu festivals follow the lunar motion; Makar Sankranti is different and is connected with the movement of the sun. his is the day winter officially ends, and spring begins. The only festival, as I write and think about it, to fall on a fixed date every year – January 14th. A characteristic time of discarding the previous season and the beginning of a fresh new season.
Any event is much better experienced at the heart of the action. Getting into the core of the kite flying festival would be a great idea from this perspective. But be aware. It can be very dangerous.
India’s has banned the so-called killer kite strings. In spite of all the effort, this week a bunch of people all over India suffered from injuries and accidents caused by strong lines due to kite fights.
Many kite fighters like to better their chances for cutting opponents. They use enhanced string and fiber lines and much more dangerous lines encrusted with glass. When those lines fall on roads and people, they are a hazard and can at its worst slit their throats. This year alone in Gujarat over 150 persons were treated for injuries on Saturday. Kite fliers know this and take their proper precautions.
Despite this, it is a festive day all over India. Different parts of India celebrates its local form of this festival.
