Social awareness
Social awareness and disabled peoples' thoughts on disability have changed over the years in Vietnam. Looking back a ten years decade, people are now aware that if vulnerable groups of people with disabilities are supported and provided with good conditions, integration into community is not as big a problem as before.
Thanks to dissemination and international cooperation on disability, many policies on disability by the State have been issued, such as Ordinance on Disabled Persons, Decrees and Decisions on disability and co funding and collaboration with different organizations is quite common.
The National Coordinating Council on Disability (NCCD) is the State's attention towards the disabled in Viet Nam and organizations like Handicapped International Vietnam (http://handicapvietnam.org/) are partners in this big field. People with disabilities themselves have been aware of their situation and tried their best to overcome difficulties caused by disability as well as other obstructions to join in activities on education, employment, sport and other social activities.
They are not different but we still call them differently-abled, special children, physically challenged and what not. However, if you see them perform, paint, doing handiwork, learn and play you will have a lot of emotions stirred in you. Organizations like Handicap International Vietnam strengthen Teachers’ and doctors’ capacities with trainings and the development of manuals and tools.
But not only schools and hospitals are their target. They organize as well educational meetings on early detection, folic acid and rubella treatment. This helps couples to prevent as best as possible against birth defects.
This are just some minor samples but if you look at the images you see how much the children enjoy their daily care.
