As a photographer and traveller, I am always searching for information on things to do, or what to see. Same same in Porto. Especially stuff off the beaten track. There are a lot of references to Mercado do Bolhão (Bolhão Market), but at this point, it has become not so “off the beaten path”, as usual with " secret information. Nevertheless, it is worth a visit.
Writing about markets, I want to mention Praia de Matosinhos beach as it is the most important beach with easy access. The beach offers a beautiful stretch of golden sands and waves. The sea is suitable for surfing and just a 15 minute metro journey from the center of Porto. Just keep in mind that the temperature of the sea is affected by the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the time it is shockingly frosty, even at the height of the summer.
The town of Matosinhos is famous for its fresh fish, and there are numerous excellent fish restaurants. The fish is often cooked on BBQs in front of the restaurants. You can find a large fish market in Matosinhos where you can buy fresh catch. The best time to visit the market is early in the day as it finishes by lunchtime.
