New Year - no really - it started just today.
In India, each region has its distinct tradition of celebrating New Years. In the state of Maharashtra, the New Year is commemorated on the first day of the Chaitra month according to the Lunar calendar of the Hindu religion. The day is named Gudi Padwa and is celebrated today on March 28.
Days before the festival, home cleaning is part of the job. Houses and doorsteps are decorated with Rangoli. Rangoli are patterns created in living rooms or courtyards with colored rice, dry flour, sand or flower petals.
Everyone is dressing up in traditional style. Women drape the Navari, (traditional sari) and the men wear Kurta teamed up with Dhoti or Pyjama. All families are getting together to celebrate their New Year.
